August will soon draw to a close. College students will soon return to their college campuses. Whether you are headed out of state or are returning to your Nebraska college or university, you will probably soon encounter alcohol. Many college students feel pressure to drink and drive, but this is a foolhardy and deadly mistake. In addition to putting yourself and your friends at risk, you may incur a charge of driving under the influence (DUI). Before you return to college for the fall semester, you should know a few important facts about drinking and driving in college.
Campus police officers have real authority
You may think that your on-campus security officers do not have the authority to arrest you, but this is not necessarily true. Many campus police have the same powers as city and county officers. This means that if a campus officer sees you drinking and driving, they may arrest you and charge you with DUI.
Schools have their own disciplinary proceedings
In addition to facing the Nebraska court system, you may also have to face your school’s disciplinary board. Colleges and universities have their own procedures for ethical and criminal violations. Your school may choose to formally reprimand you, suspend you or even expel you.
The effects of a DUI can last the rest of your life
If you are convicted of a DUI, the results are long-lasting. A DUI can affect your schooling, career options, driving privileges, housing options and reputation. Some colleges choose to expel students convicted of DWI or DUI. Many jobs will not hire someone with a DUI on their record. You may lose your license for months or years, and your friends will know that you chose to drink and drive.
