Among the many concerns that a driver in Nebraska is likely to have after an arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol is whether or not they will lose the right to drive for a period of time. For many people, the ability to drive is directly linked to their ability to get to and from work and, therefore, to support themslves and maybe even their family as well. It is no wonder, then, that driving privileges after a DUI evoke a lot of concern.
In Nebraska, a driver who has been convicted of a drunk driving offense might indeed be ordered to surrender their driver’s license for some time. However, some people will be able to reinstate their driving privileges thanks to the ignition interlock permit program. As explained by the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles, an IIP is allows a person to drive if they install and use an ignition interlock device.
Not every driver may qualify for this program. A person must not have had their driving privileges revoked in any other state and the DUI offense for which they seek the IIP must have occurred in Nebraska. The driver must also be a resident of Nebraska and be a legal adult who had a valid driver’s license before their drunk driving arrest.
The Nebraska Legislature adds that a driver might also be required to abstain from alcohol during the time that they must use the IID. Some people may even have to wear monitoring devices.
