A shift in immigration policies

Immigration in the United States has been a hot-button topic for decades, and even more so in recent months. Immigrants today deal with obstacles such as discrimination in business, education and criminal justice issues, and seek solutions in a country they have decided -- or have been forced -- to call home. While immigration laws in Nebraska are uncertain and complex, they are also continuously changing to meet the needs of the American population.

The Omaha World-Herald reports on some of the more recent issues in America's immigration laws. With the new Trump presidency, Nebraska could face changes in immigration policies. Among such changes are the loss in ability to work and drive. The Omaha also notes that about 3,300 immigrants in Nebraska have qualified for temporary work permits and Social Security numbers under the federal program Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. New regulations could threaten the operations of such programs, which also include available health care for immigrants.

Nebraskans for Peace, a statewide grassroots advocacy program, reveals that despite recent potential changes in immigration policies, Nebraska stands as one of the New Immigration States in the country. Both documented and undocumented immigration is on the rise in the state, which is more recently leaning toward restrictive regulations. The foreign population in Nebraska may be small compared to state natives, but the presence of immigrants is loud. From 2000 to 2006, the foreign population increased by 34 percent in the state, and although officials have implemented many programs assisting immigrants, there nevertheless exists a current shift from immigration-friendly proposals to more restrictive immigration policies.
