This week, two stories emerged out of Lincoln regarding a drug bust and the largest health care fraud in Nebraska.
On Wednesday, January 14th deputies of Lancaster County sheriff’s office pulled over Jacob Cappel, 31, after he had been tailgating another vehicle on Interstate 80. Cappel had a bong and a burned joint in plain sight, compelling the deputy to search the car. He found more than 12 pounds of marijuana in the vehicle, as well as 107 grams of a potent form of the drug, called “shatter,” separated into envelopes. He arrested Cappel on suspicion of possession with intent to deliver.
Wednesday also saw the sentencing of Scott Tran, a 45-year-old Lincoln pharmacist who pleaded guilty to health care fraud after a gambling addiction drove him to devise a scheme to get reimbursed for drugs that were never prescribed by doctors. The judge sentenced Tran to a prison term of 110 months followed by three years of supervised release and ordered him to pay a restitution of more than $14 million.
