Eligibility Requirements

In order to become a naturalized citizen of the U.S., you must first establish permanent residence in the country. If you have a green card and you have been a permanent resident of the U.S. for at least five years, the requirements listed below will also need to be met in order to apply for citizenship.

  • You are at least 18 years of age and demonstrated good moral character
  • You are able to read, write, and speak English
  • You have been present physically in the U.S. for at least half of the required five years of permanent residency
  • You have spent no more than one year outside of the U.S.
  • You have lived in state (or district) where you are filing your application for no fewer than three months
  • Your current primary home is not outside the U.S.
  • You can pass a test on basic U.S. history and government
  • You are ready to swear your loyalty to the U.S. and believe in the principles of the U.S. Constitution
